Stepstool Manifesto

2020

"Stepstool Manifesto" is a film about the honest expression of the multiple self. Edited from a single take of a performance shot in Virginia Commonwealth University's production room, this film uses spoken word and heterogenous sound from the technological and natural world to from to express ambiguity and depersonalization with humor and sincerity.

This is the second appearance of this stepstool, the first of which was in the performance “Dead Cat.” It was borrowed from my roommate at the time. It was something that I liked to play with and use in different ways. At the time, I was interested in unconventional uses of objects that invoked a kind of opaque symbolism.

Camera & instruction by Alex Matzke. Sound design, editing, & performance by me.

This was enjoyable to film and edit. This is supposed to be funny, or . . . amusing?
