Shapes

2019

This is a half-autobiographical charcoal animation on a single piece of paper (or maybe two, I don’t remember), created entirely by drawing and erasing charcoal. The audio is an original piece of writing that I recorded myself.

When I listen back now, I realize that maybe I was talking about more than shapes; maybe something like the personality of objects and inanimate things; finding life & realness through representation (art.) But when I wrote the script, I was really thinking that it was a story; maybe about growing up. But something that I could draw things too.

I filmed this video over a couple days at MassArts’ stop motion animation studio. The stop motion software, Dragonframe, was very helpful in this projects because it allowed me to line up photographs with my viewfinder and trace them.
