Non-Facial Self-Portraits: An Awesome Exercise for a Potentially Awesome Selfie

Let’s get away from our faces.

Take pictures of your body and your accoutrements that surround your person.

Your hands, your feet, your shoes, your arms, your legs, your belly, your hair, your purse, your wallet, the things that reside in your pocket. Your manicured or un-manicured nails. If you want to show your earrings, take a picture but find a way to hide your face.

While you’re doing this, think about these things, and why you’re taking these pictures. We’re trying to get at what’s most important about the way you look to who you are as a person and what we want to

What was involved in getting ready for your day today?

Did you wash your face, shower, put on makeup? Fragrance?

What are you wearing right now, and why? How did you choose your clothing?

Are you wearing or holding onto any gifts? Who gave it to you.

Where did you get your clothes from? Your jewelry, if you’re wearing it?

How do you style, cut, color your hair? Why?

How would you describe your personal style?

Where did you learn to dress the way you do?

What feelings came up while doing this exercise? Do you think much about your body and the things that you wear? What isms and phobias affect how you choose to present yourself and who you “are” as a person.

Now take a look at those selfies? Which are your favorite? Why?
